What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, synthesized initially as an alternative to the anesthetic, phencyclidine (PCP); is now commonly used as an anesthetic in human medicine and an analgesic agent in multiple pain conditions.

What is Ketamine-Assisted Therapy?

Ketamine-enhanced psychotherapy has been explored as a treatment option for a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, substance use, and chronic pain.

When combined with psychotherapy, ketamine may help create conditions that make it easier to approach emotions, memories, and patterns that can otherwise feel difficult to access or change. Research suggests that ketamine may temporarily increase the brain’s capacity for learning and change, while also helping some people feel less guarded and more open to engaging in the therapeutic process.

For some individuals, ketamine can also create an altered or expanded state of awareness. These experiences may offer a different perspective on familiar struggles, bring new meaning to past experiences, or help people recognize patterns they have not been able to see as clearly before.

Rather than the experience itself being the entire treatment, psychotherapy can help you make sense of what comes up, connect those insights to your everyday life, and begin turning new perspectives into meaningful and lasting changes.

The theorized effectiveness of ketamine in psychotherapy is based on (Drozdz et al., 2022):

  • (a) increased access to traumatic memory via enhanced synaptic connectivity

  • (b) decreased central sensitization via downregulation or the prefrontal cortex

  • (c) enahnced extincition of previously paired pain-related memories.

Therefore, KAP can utilize a dosage escalation stratey to achieve diffferent levels of trance, increasing to full out-of-body experiences.
